ai-ya! 哎呀!

“ai-ya!” has probably become my most often used Chinese word…

it’s a very useful word when you:  hit your head on the very short door frame.  fall in a hole.  have too many bags to carry from the market.  run out of money on your cell phone.  can’t fit in a taxi.  your favorite restaurant stops making your favorite food.  the battery runs out on your computer.  discover that you should have worn 2 layers of clothes instead of 1, because spring doesn’t always mean warmer temperatures.  misplace your book.  spill your tea.  get a paper cut.  kill a plant.  find your money has been eaten by your dog.  hear the doorbell while you’re in the shower.  i think you’re getting the idea…

but my most frustrated “ai-ya!” comes when discovering that my computer is unwilling to perform the task i have demanded of it!  and all too often, that task is related to allowing me to write or publish a new post on this website!

  1. I’m glad to know someone else has adopted that word into their vocabulary. I often think, “what did I say in English before I had ai ya?” I mean, “oh no” just doesn’t have the same effect.
